''Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.” - Ralph Lauren
Entering the warm and inviting showroom at The Stylist LA, be ready to be greeted with a big smile and most likely a hug or two. Founded in 2009 by Emily McDonald, a USC grad, with a big idea to provide affordable fashion to be “borrowed” for a 7 to 10 day rental. As a sorority girl at Vanderbilt in the early 80’s, recalling all the southern hospitality and endless events, the daily dilemma was always “what to wear.” Or, more importantly, what could I afford to wear with my champagne taste, and unfortunately, my beer budget. My usual routine was to scavenge through my roommate’s closets, as I was lucky enough to live with some gorgeous southern belles with wardrobes to match. Emily has filled this niche with a fabulous showroom in LA, overflowing with a well curated selection of everything from evening gowns to sequined rompers.

My visit to The Stylist LA was so much fun. With a friendly feeling, much like your best friend’s living room, there’s pretty much something for everyone. As my gorgeous actress daughter is one of the local stylists, I may be somewhat partial! Quite honestly, as I’m used to styling her looks, this was going to be an interesting exercise having the tables turned. My daughter met me at the door with the perfect selection of dresses preselected. She totally nailed my style with on point perfection. The first dress I chose was an impeccably cut Dixie Lace Maxi by the brand, Nightcap. I wasn’t familiar with this designer and loved the way it hugged my figure and created the most gorgeous silhouette. I carried a pair of sequined Jimmy Choos along, having scored them on a recent Intermix clearance sale. Glad I did as it was just the right combination. Stylist has a lovely selection of jewelry for purchase and I couldn’t resist scooping up a cuff bracelet or two.

The fun was just beginning as my daughter had quite a selection for me to try on. I slipped into the Florence Lace Maxi dress, by the same designer, Nightcap. Falling in love with the fit on the first one, I decided to try this one in a vibrant shade of turquoise blue. Wearing a pair of round rimmed reflective shades by Rayban, sent to me by DITTO, this completed the look. If you like sporting a pair of the latest designer shades, head on over and sign up for DITTO’s great service. Use the code “CGOSTYLE” to get your first month free!

On to the next style, I snatched up a sequined number by Parker, the Hayden Feather Dress. This one had a bit of a Charleston flapper vibe to it. Throwing on a pair of dress pumps by Stuart Weitzman or a pair of strappy sandals from your closet, you’re ready for a night on the town!

Next, my eye went to a Sequined Romper by Karina Grimaldi. This was my absolute favorite! It was a Beyonce moment and I had a hard time letting this one go. It was an absolute dream to wear and the fit was to die for. A stylish compliment to the Jimmy Choo stilettos.

I was a kid in a candy store having a hard time deciding what’s next. My time was running out and I had one more selection to make. My daughter had chosen the Byron Dress by Privacy Please in the most beautiful shade of pale lavender. With a tie front, this gown was ethereal with quite a boho vibe. My girl Maddie picked up on my love for anything remotely boho. Feeling beautiful, I couldn’t resist my usual “twirling” which happens at just about every opportunity I can find. Emily has a great eye for discovering unusual brands with the most flattering designs. And this one was no exception!
Overall, it was a delightful experience that I highly recommend. If you’re in the area, call to make an appointment, and you’re guaranteed to be in great hands. With rental prices that are really affordable, it’s a fabulous way to dress in style without spending a lot of money. You just select a dress and they take care of the rest. You take it home for a 7 to 10 day period and just ship it back to them in the envelope provided with free shipping. They take care of the dry cleaning and you’re good to go. Many of the looks you see are available nationwide at The Stylist LA’s Online Shop or at the LA showroom. If you stop by, say “Hi” to Emily and the gang for me! And get ready for the time of your life and some fabulous style inspiration.
