I was delighted to make the connection with Dogeared centered around a woman I deeply admire. When I heard the company was doing a collaboration with one of my personal iconic heroes, Maya Angelou, I jumped at the opportunity to work with them. It’s easy to get lost on their site, as each piece tells a story. The legacy of Maya Angelou is the latest and one of the most powerful stories to date. A close confidante of Oprah, Maya could often be found sharing her wisdom on the Oprah Winfrey Show. She’s one of those women who’s deeply relatable yet seemed to be filled with a profound wisdom at a whole different level of spirit and consciousness. Having come through a lifetime of adversity, Maya was very outspoken yet always dignified and gracious. She was an empowered woman long before we banded together as a collective to empower one another.

I’ll never forget being mesmerized by her presence and the gift of language that seemed unique to this powerful woman. She was sharing her wisdom to help women to wake up to the immense power that’s inside of every one of us. It was one of those early mornings and I was getting my kids ready for school. As usual, the Oprah Winfrey Show was on and Maya’s formidable presence drew me in. She said, “When someone shows you who they are…Believe them.” It was a simple statement yet filled with the goldmine of wisdom that was Maya from her personal life experience. It was a moment of time that remains in my consciousness as I began to embody that wisdom. It was something I needed to hear as I was continually making excuses for others and always trying to change people for the better. I listened intently and I began to live by this philosophy. It wasn’t my job to “fix” others and to try to get them to be kinder to others. It was my job to understand who they are and accept them as they are. I’ve always had a deep desire to change the world to a loving, kind and peaceful world but the truth is…we can only change ourselves. That Oprah “AHA” moment was a life lesson encapsulated in an instant.’
