Through the Looking Glass

“We have to confront ourselves. Do we like what we see in the mirror? And, according to our light, according to our understanding, according to our courage, we will have to say yea or nay – and rise.” – Maya Angelou

Would you be interested in buying one of the greatest tools available for personal development from me? Would you pay $1000 for it? $500? How about the special “Sisters Only” price, good for the next 10 minutes only and … just $199!?

What if I told you that you already own it? And it won’t cost you a penny!

One of the greatest tools of all time for immense personal development is something you use every single day.

It’s right there in your bathroom. It’s most likely the first thing you see when you wake up and the last thing you see before you go to bed.

What is it?

It’s that “Mirror Mirror on the Wall.”

As I began my healing journey back from Lyme Disease, I discovered the power of “Mirror Work.”

Yes, mirror work is a thing. It came into the mainstream, at least in the Self Help arena, through the brilliance of Louise Hay, the Founder of Hay House decades ago.

Louise was in her 50’s when she was diagnosed with cancer. She made a decision to begin looking inside of herself for both the root of her illness and the path to her own healing. She began to incorporate “mirror work” into her healing journey.

Miracles began to unfold in Louise’s life and in her quest to heal the root of her illness.

Inspired by Louise’s healing journey, I decided I had little to lose and everything to gain by experimenting with that mirror – the one I tended to avoid most of the time.

When you’re bedridden with Lyme Disease and you’ve lost so much weight that you resemble more of a pale, feeble skeleton than your former self, you’re not exactly dying to look in the mirror – no pun intended. (Ok, maybe a teeny weeny one.)

In the spiritual world of personal development, many of the top inspirational leaders teach that life is a mirror – that every single person you interact with is a mirror – reflecting to us both “the good and the bad.”

In other words, what we don’t like about ourselves, we tend to see in others; we aren’t often conscious enough to understand that what we’re seeing also exists within us.

Of course, the flip side is true as well – the beauty and positive aspects we see in others, exist within us too.

Simply put, “You Spot It, You Got It!” Sister.

Back to that mirror work. Let’s just say what is simple isn’t always easy. When you look as I did, unattractive as hell, you’re more likely to have an aversion versus an attachment to mirrors.

I believe I would have rather jumped into an active volcano than take a good, long hard look at myself and my reflection in the mirror.

It wasn’t because I was ugly.

It was because I believed I was ugly … and broken.

Yet, somehow I did. Each day, I would wake up and begin looking directly into my eyes. At first, only for a second or two as it felt much too awkward and uncomfortable. Each day, I would last a little longer. It would begin to feel a little easier. Over time, I began to tell myself beautiful, loving, kind things about myself.

What first began feeling unnatural began, overtime, to feel natural – to be natural.

Let’s just say that was the beginning of changing a lifelong pattern of self hatred.

Self love begins one thought at a time.

Self hatred can’t hold a candle to the power of Self love.

How do I know?

Self love saved my life. Mirror work transformed my life.

Maya Angelou was one of the brightest lights in the world. She would often share how seeing the world and others as her personal mirror was one of the transformative things in her life. She refused to look away at things she perceived as negative. She saw her “triggers” or personal pain points that were “mirrored back to her” through others as a gateway to increased self awareness, self healing and an elevated consciousness.

Changing the world begins with changing ourselves.

Changing the way we see ourselves, both good and bad, is the ultimate doorway to a new life and a new way of being.

It’s been a long time since I began doing mirror work. Over the past few years, mirrors have become my friend – my greatest teacher – just like the world that’s the biggest mirror of all.

I’ve learned through experience that our eyes truly are the window to the soul.

There is no such thing as “ugly” when it comes to our being.

Our soul only knows beauty. Our true nature is beauty.

Sometimes, it just takes a little work and “reflection” to see it.

Cheers Beauties, Mirror Mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest one of all?

Take a good long look in the mirror and let me know what you see.
